Ep 85 Positive Aging is Your Secret to Health and Longevity
Welcome to Episode 85, a takeaway episode from my conversation with renowned ageism activist, Ashton Applewhite and author of the book "This Chair Rocks - A Manifesto Against Ageism."
On episode 84, Ashton explains that understanding aging can reduce fear and bias, and improve health outcomes. She shares that people better informed about aging feel better about it, leading to fewer health problems. Ashton references Becca Levy's research, indicating that positive beliefs about aging can aid recovery from mild cognitive impairment.
In this takeaway episode, I share my personal takeaway from our conversation, underpinned by a survey I conducted in 2022. Among the findings, the top areas for life improvement were physical fitness (72%) and physical health (58%). This ties in with Ashton's closing thought - if you're less ageist, you're likely to live longer, heal quicker, and maintain cognitive health.
On this episode, I share a true story about my 92-year-old father-in-law, who, despite suffering a mild stroke, continues in the volunteer role of president of a local community theater. His positive view of aging and his purposeful involvement in the community theater is a testament to the health benefits of a positive attitude toward aging.
My challenge to you is to check your ageism and take the age bias test on Becca Levy’s website.
Embrace age pride, be positive about your own aging, and possibly contribute to your good health and longevity. That's my wish for you!
